The importance of ski waxing and maintenance

L’importanza della sciolinatura e della manutenzione degli sci

Whether you're an alpine, Nordic, or snowboard enthusiast, maintaining your equipment is essential for optimal performance and safety on the snow. Well-waxed skis and well-maintained edges not only improve glide, but also allow for greater control, stability, and fun on any type of snow.

In this guide, we'll explain why waxing is so important , which basic products to use, and which tools are needed for proper home maintenance.

Why it's important to wax your skis regularly

Ski bases—often made of polyethylene or high-density materials—are porous. This means that, without maintenance, they tend to dry out, lose their glide, and absorb more impurities.

Waxing regularly allows you to:

  • Increase glide on all types of snow

  • Protect the insole from abrasion and oxidation

  • Extend the life of your skis

Good waxing is, therefore, the first step to truly enjoying every outing.

Solid or liquid base wax? When to use them

For those who want to carry out maintenance independently, Maplus offers effective and easy-to-use solutions, even without a professional waxing iron.

Solid waxes (base)

Ideal when you want a long-lasting and deep waxing, solid waxes are the perfect choice for a more thorough preparation.
For everyday use we recommend the Maplus BP10 Solide , available in the Hot , Med and Cold versions.

  • BP10 Yellow → for warm or wet snow

  • BP10 Violet → for cold or very abrasive snow

  • BP10 Red → the most versatile choice

Liquid waxes

Liquid waxes are the quickest and most practical solution for those who want immediate glide without having to use an iron.
They can be applied in just a few minutes and are perfect for those who ski occasionally or as a supplement between one solid waxing and another.

In addition to the advantages of speed and simplicity, our liquid waxes guarantee excellent base protection and a significant increase in glide on all types of snow.

BP10 Liquid – Hot, Med, Cold (with kit)

The BP10 Liquid range represents the liquid version of our most used base waxes.
Available in Hot , Med and Cold versions, they are also supplied in complete kits that include everything needed for correct application.

  • BP10 Liquid Hot → for wet or warm snow

  • BP10 Liquid Cold → for cold temperatures or abrasive snow

  • BP10 Liquid Med → the most versatile choice
( Maplus advice: even among liquid snow, the Med is the “safest” solution if you don’t know the exact snow conditions.)

The importance of blade maintenance

The foils are what allow you to:

  • Curve with precision

  • Have grip on the ice

  • Maintain stability at high speeds

Over time they become rounded and lose effectiveness.
To keep them performing at their best, you need some simple but essential tools.

Recommended tools

  • Lime (1–2 is enough for home use)

  • Teams to set the angle

  • Ceramic or diamond stones for finishing

  • Clamps and supports to block the ski during processing

Proper sharpening, even a light one, can completely transform the feel of the snow.

Recommended maintenance routine

Here's a simple routine designed for everyone:

After each exit

  • Dry skis and bindings thoroughly

  • Run a diamond over it to remove small burrs

  • If necessary, apply a Maplus liquid wax

Every 4–6 exits

  • Solid wax to impregnate the base

  • Light sharpening of the edges with squares and files

At the beginning and end of the season

  • Application of a protective wax against oxidation

  • Complete control of the blades

  • Restoring the flatness of the slab (to be carried out in the laboratory, if necessary)

Conclusion

Ski maintenance isn't just for athletes or professionals: it's a care every enthusiast should take to improve their experience on the snow. With the right products and tools, it's easy to achieve amazing results even at home.
